Our 5-week programme is intensive, progressive, and designed to build real-world skills from the ground up—whether you're coming from a military/police background or as a civilian with the right mindset and fitness. Here's our honest, practical advice to set yourself up for success:

  1. Be as fit as you claim to be
Gravity seems to hit harder in the Southern Hemisphere ? — seriously though, our course includes demanding physical elements like protective tactics, long days on your feet and scenario-based training. You’ll undergo our Standard Fitness Test on the first day. details on the fitness test can be found here: ronin.co.za/resources/Documents/fitness.pd

  2. Secure your criminal clearance certificate in good time
A key entry requirement is an approved criminal background check (also called a police clearance certificate or certificate of good conduct).

It must be dated within 6 months of your course start date and issued by an appropriate authority (e.g., a national law enforcement agency). We also accept clearances from trusted providers like
    - Afiswitch (for South African citizens),
    - Disclosure Scotland (for UK citizens)
    - Intercheck (Australia)
    - Veritas Check (New Zealand)
    - CertN (Canada), and similar services.

Many agencies now issue digital certificates that include a QR code or verification link for easy online validation—great for quick checks. If your certificate is digital and verifiable this way, that's perfect.

If it's not digitally verifiable (e.g., no QR code or link), please bring the original physical document with you—no scanned copies, photocopies, or printouts will be accepted. It should feature a stamp, holographic seal, or original ink signature to confirm authenticity.

Because we work closely with government entities and specialised units, we carry out thorough due diligence on all participants. Getting this sorted well in advance is essential—any delays or issues with your clearance could impact your participation on the course.

  3. Master manual transmission driving – make it second nature In addition to holding a valid manual driver's license (Code B or equivalent) for at least 2 years (a strict entry requirement), ensure you're genuinely comfortable and confident behind the wheel of a manual vehicle. Our protective driving module includes advanced techniques, evasive maneuvers and real-road scenarios—shifting gears should feel automatic, not something you have to think about or look down for. If it's been a while since you've driven a stick shift / manual transmission regularly, get plenty of practice before arrival. It will make the driving portion far more enjoyable and effective.

  4. Arrive with an open mind This is one of the most important things. Our training is multi-disciplined and scenario-driven, blending executive protection, medical care (including FREC 3), firearms, venue security and more. Be ready to absorb new information, adapt quickly and work as part of a team. A disciplined work ethic, humility, and willingness to learn go further than any prior "know-how."

  5. No need for prior additional courses We are fully progressive—meaning we teach everything from foundational to advanced levels. Chances are high that you'll have to unlearn some habits or techniques from other courses anyway, as our methods emphasize realism, safety, and effectiveness in medium- to high-risk environments. Save your time and money: just bring a positive attitude, meet the entry requirements.

If you prepare along these lines, you'll get the most out of the experience and position yourself strongly for a career in close protection.
